Omaha Beach 1.1

Omaha Beach reconstructs the early part of D-Day on Easy Red and Fox Green beaches (positioned just north and east of today’s Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial).

It is recommended to begin the experience at the parking lot adjacent to the beach located just below the German WWII strong point WN 62.

The Omaha Beach app unveils the events that transpired here just before and after H-Hour (06:30 AM) on the morning of June 6, 1944.

Roam around the beach and tidal flat in this area, relive the naval bombardment, bombings, and rocket launches before the amphibious assault. Witness how the LCTs (Landing Craft Tank) disembark three Sherman tanks each at the water’s edge, over 300 m from the high water mark. Observe as numerous LCVPs (Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel) deliver infantry amidst heavy German artillery, mortar, and small arms fire in the surf.

The reconstruction is meticulously crafted based on extensive documentation of this pivotal World War II event. The current version presents an experimental approach to mobile augmented reality storytelling. Anticipate future updates encompassing subsequent phases of the battle.

Depart from D514 (Route d’Omaha Beach) at Colleville-sur-Mer and proceed to the parking lot beneath WN 62 (Widerstandsnest 62). Begin your exploration using the app to delve into the beach’s historical significance and its poignant events that unfolded more than seven decades ago.

Additionally, note that strong erosion has taken place on this section of Omaha Beach since 1944. The high water mark now sits over 25 meters inland compared to its position during WWII.
